Roblox Lawsuit – February 2025 Update

Individuals are filing Roblox addiction lawsuits because of the psychological, physical, and financial harms they experienced due to excessively playing Roblox. These lawsuits allege Roblox Corporation designed the video game to be addictive, did not properly warn people of this danger, and did not do enough to prevent addiction.

Young people and children who have become addicted to Roblox have experienced anxiety, depression, seizures, and gamer’s rage due to compulsive use of the platform. People filing these lawsuits believe Roblox Corporation knows the game is addictive and harmful to children. Affected parents and young people can file a lawsuit against Roblox Corporation in state court in hopes of receiving justice and compensation.

Roblox Lawsuit Timeline & News – February 2025

December 13, 2024: Parent Files Addiction Lawsuit Against Roblox on Behalf of Child

On December 13, 2024, Evette Gibson filed a product liability lawsuit against Roblox Corporation and Epic Games. She claims that Roblox and Fortnite’s addictive platform caused her child to develop a gaming disorder. She also says that excessive and compulsive use of these video games interrupted her child’s brain development.

November 18, 2024: Roblox Key Safety Changes in Response to Pressure from Concerned Parents

In response to mounting pressure from parents and advocates, Roblox released a significant safety update to its platform. This new update allows parents a greater level of oversight and control over their child’s use of the Roblox platform. Additionally, parents can use their devices to monitor and change their child’s account. Previously, parents had to use their child’s device to access their Roblox account. Critics say this action does not go far enough, as digitally savvy children often find ways to sidestep parental controls.

October 31, 2024: Roblox 2024 Report Reveals that Tens of Millions of Its Daily Active Users are Under 13

In a report released on October 31, 2024, Roblox Corporation announced that 34.5 million of its daily active users were under the age of 13. This is despite the game having a T (for teen) rating. Roblox defines active users as individual users who engage with the platform each day. Given that children are more likely to develop problematic gaming usage, these numbers show the need for increased attention on the impact of Roblox’s platform on children and teens.

June 5, 2024: Panel Denies Request To Create an MDL for Video Game Addiction Lawsuit

On June 5, 2024, the Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation rejected a request to create a multidistrict lawsuit—or MDL—about video gaming addictions. In the court order, the panel noted that the plaintiffs who filed the request had significantly different allegations against different defendants from each other, such as Roblox, Epic Games, Rockstar North, and others. Because of this, the panel concluded that this specific group of plaintiffs could not consolidate their lawsuits unless they had more closely related legal allegations. However, another MDL may be formed. If that does not occur, young people and parents can still file lawsuits against Roblox for video game addiction. Our partner firms are still accepting cases.

February 21, 2024: Parents File Class Action Lawsuit Against Roblox

On February 21, 2024, concerned parents filed a class action lawsuit against Roblox Corporation for creating a gaming platform that preys on children’s vulnerabilities to maximize profits. The legal complaint claims that Roblox Corporation knowingly designed an immersive, addictive, and exploitative platform. The parents believe Roblox is responsible for the mental, physical, and financial harm the Roblox platform caused their children.  These gambling lawsuits are different from personal injury lawsuits for video game addiction. Concerned parents and young people are encouraged to talk to our firm about filing a case due to addiction and injuries caused by addiction.

What is the Roblox Addiction Lawsuit About?

In the individual lawsuits against Roblox, parents and young people claim Roblox’s immersive and endlessly playable framework is addictive, especially for children and young people. Users can play existing games or create their own on the platform. They can purchase in-game content, mostly through micro-transactions with Robux, an in-game currency you can purchase or earn. Children and teens who excessively play Roblox may have trouble self-limiting play time because the system feeds on their brains’ desire to engage in reward-seeking and socially validating activities. Unfortunately, teens and children who engage with games like Roblox may experience more social anxiety, worsening ADHD symptoms, gamer’s rage, depression, joint problems, and other serious disorders.

Why Are People Filing Roblox Lawsuits?

People are filing lawsuits against Roblox Corporation because they or their child experienced addiction, gamer’s rage, depression, anxiety, or other severe complications because of the compulsive use of Roblox. Young adults and parents of minors claim Roblox used predatory practices and intentionally designed a game that is addictive to children and young people under the age of 24. Those filing lawsuits are requesting compensation to cover the mental, physical, and financial harms inflicted by Roblox and the addiction it can cause.

What Is Roblox?

Roblox is a virtual platform where people can create, sell, and play games for free or purchase. Users have access to a growing community of 88.9 million daily active users in the third quarter of 2024. Roblox offers users a massive amount of diverse and dynamic games on its platform. Its endless play feature—i.e., where there is no definite end to the game—encourages compulsive and excessive engagement from users. Users can also create their own games and participate in Roblox’s virtual economy, which uses Robux as currency.

Roblox offers over 40 million different games—also referred to as Experiences—across a wide range of genres. For example, Town RPG Brookhaven combines adventure, dating, and role-playing game (RPG) features and had over 50.24 billion visits in July 2024. In Adopt Me!, users can adopt, care for, and trade virtual pets, and this game accumulated 36.7 billion visits in July 2024

What Stage is the Roblox Lawsuit In?

The Roblox lawsuit is in its early stages. Parents and young people have started legal actions in state courts across the United States. As more cases are filed, the plaintiffs may join forces in a multidistrict litigation. If you think you or your child developed an addiction to Roblox and suffered serious mental health injuries, you may qualify to sue. An attorney with knowledge of product liability and video game addiction can help you understand if you are eligible for compensation.

About the Defendant: Roblox Corporation

Roblox Corporation was founded in 2004 by David Baszucki and Erik Cassel. They created an ever-changing, dynamic platform that hosts professional worlds and content through user-generated games and features. Since its inception in 2004, Roblox has become the second most popular video gaming website by share of total visits in March 2024.

Allegations Against the Roblox Corporation

People are accusing Roblox Corporation of creating an addictive platform that draws children in and makes them compulsively engage with it. People claim that they or their child developed a gaming addiction, gamer’s rage, anxiety, depression, or a similar injury after using Roblox Corporation’s products. According to the legal complaints, Roblox Corporation is aware of the addictive features of its platform and games and the risks to children.

What Is Roblox and Video Game Addiction?

In the DSM-5-TR, The American Psychiatric Association describes internet gaming disorder (ISD) as the compulsive use of a video game or platform in a way that significantly interferes with multiple areas of a person’s life.

Using the proposed DSM-5-TR criteria, the general signs of a Roblox addiction include:

  • Withdrawal symptoms such as irritability, anger, or depression when the person cannot play Roblox
  • Preoccupation with the game, even when not playing
  • Build up of tolerance that leads to increasing the amount of time someone plays Roblox
  • Neglecting fundamental areas of the person’s life to accommodate more Roblox playtime

At this time, researchers are still looking into further diagnostic criteria to use to diagnose someone with IGD.

What Are the Signs of Roblox Addiction?

The signs of a roblox addiction in kids include the following:

  • The child constantly thinks about, talks about, or wants to play Roblox games.
  • The child may also have difficulty logging off or limiting how much they play on the platform.
  • Children with a Roblox addiction may also have withdrawals, including gamer’s rage, outbursts, anxiety, or depression.
  • They may also excessively spend money on the game and neglect other areas of their life—such as hygiene, in-person friendships, and school—to be on Roblox more.

If you think your child has a Roblox addiction, consider reaching out to a medical professional. You can also consider reaching out to a legal professional who can help. You may be entitled to compensation for the mental, physical, and financial damages you or your loved ones experienced.

What Makes Roblox Addictive?

Roblox has various features that can lead people to get addicted to the platform. For example, game designers use a compulsion loop to increase engagement. Compulsion loops keep users in a constant cycle of anticipation, activity, and reward, which trigger the brain’s reward system. Roblox’s expansive social network and validation system can be especially appealing for minors whose brains are hardwired to seek peer approval. Moreover, the microtransaction economy powered by Robux and endless gameplay—where a game does not have a definite end—creates an immersive ecosystem that keeps children logged on.

What Are the Most Popular and Addictive Games on Roblox?

With over 40 million games and counting, Roblox has a massive suite of offerings for its users. Brookhaven RP—one of the top-performing games on the platform—empowers users to “be who they want to be” by creating their own personas, houses, and virtual lives where they can interact with other Roblox users. Adopt Me! is another fan-favorite, where users can adopt, care for, and exchange virtual pets, increasing engagement through the appeal of caring for a virtual animal that requires feeding, playtime, etc. Finally, Blox Fruits is an action-adventure style game that mimics the characters and story in the popular One Piece Manga series.

This graphic shows the top three games on Roblox by all time visits as of July 2024. The thumbnails for each game are shown.

Are Robux Similar to Gambling?

Robux is the virtual currency used on the Roblox platform to make in-game purchases. Players can also earn Robux by selling their Experiences—i.e., games—or avatar items on the platform. The Robux currency encourages users to spend, buy, and earn money in a reward-based system, which can lead to similar experiences people encounter when gambling.

Studies About Video Game Addiction in Children and Young People

As public awareness about the impact of technology on developing minds increases, researchers have focused on studying the risk factors, characteristics, and effects of gaming disorders in children and young adults. For example, historically, children and young people with ADHD, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), anxiety, depression, and social anxiety are at a higher risk of developing a gaming addiction. Additionally, having a gaming disorder appears to correlate with difficulty controlling and managing one’s impulses and emotions.

Important Study: Internet gaming disorder in Lebanon: Relationships with age, sleep habits, and academic achievement

In Internet gaming disorder in Lebanon: Relationships with age, sleep habits, and academic achievement, researchers surveyed 524 high school students in Lebanon. About 9.2 percent of the study’s participants met the criteria for internet gaming disorder. On average, those with the disorder slept significantly less, had poorer academic performance, and were younger than casual gamers. This study highlights the importance of moderating risk factors and implementing in-game safety features to protect children from developing internet gaming disorders.

Can Parents File Roblox Lawsuits for Their Children?

Parents can file Roblox addiction lawsuits on behalf of their children if they meet the eligibility criteria and do not miss the filing deadline. Parents can file an individual lawsuit in the applicable state court. If a multidistrict litigation is established in the future, the parents may be able to join one of these. Banding together can streamline the litigation process, saving valuable time and money.

What Damages Can People Sue Roblox Manufacturers For?

People may be eligible to receive compensation to cover their and their child’s losses because of a Roblox addiction. For example, parents may qualify for reimbursement of educational expenses for the student to retake classes or work with a tutor. Or, parents may get money to address the medical expenses—like therapy or doctor’s visits—because of the child’s Roblox addiction. Lastly, if parents win their cases, they may secure a settlement to cover the legal fees they incurred to file and manage the lawsuit. Our partner firms work on a contingency basis, which means there are no upfront costs (outside of filing fees) and payment is only made after a successful lawsuit.

Who Qualifies to File a Roblox Lawsuit?

To file a Roblox addiction lawsuit, each person has to meet certain eligibility requirements. Our legal partners are focusing on the specific injuries listed below:

  • The child must have a medical diagnosis of depression, anxiety, gamer’s rage, seizures, or a similar condition after they started excessively playing Roblox.
  • The child must have proof that they played Roblox for at least three hours a day for five weeks or more.
  • The child must have started playing Roblox before turning 24 and started developing symptoms of a gaming disorder before age 25.

An experienced attorney can help you determine if your child meets the eligibility criteria for filing a Roblox addiction lawsuit. They can also help you gather evidence to build your case against Roblox Corporation.

What Proof Do You Need to File a Roblox Lawsuit?

To file a Roblox addiction lawsuit, you need to prove that your child meets the eligibility criteria and that Roblox is at fault for your child’s mental, physical, and financial injuries. For example, you can present printouts or screenshots of your gaming system’s record of your child’s total game time on Roblox. Additionally, you can request medical records from your child’s therapist or physician or academic reports from your child’s school. Your attorney can also help you locate and interview experts—like psychologists or gaming addiction researchers—who can support your allegations against Roblox Corporation.

Six Steps to File a Roblox Lawsuit

These are the six steps for filing a Roblox addiction lawsuit:

  1. Figure out if you qualify to sue
  2. Talk to a product liability or personal injury attorney
  3. Prepare and file the complaint before the deadline expires
  4. Exchange documents and information to build your Roblox addiction case during discovery
  5. Negotiate a settlement with Roblox corporation
  6. Go to trial if you cannot reach a fair settlement agreement

First, you need to determine if you meet the eligibility criteria. An attorney knowledgeable in gaming addiction can help you with this. Then, you need to prepare and file a legal complaint with the correct court before the applicable filing deadline expires. Next, you will gather evidence and exchange information in the discovery process, which will help you to get what you need to build a strong case. Finally, you or your lawyer would participate in settlement discussions and (if these talks are unfruitful) go to trial.

What to Expect When Filing a Roblox Lawsuit

Filing and resolving a lawsuit against Roblox Corporation may take time. You may have to follow specific procedural steps along the way—like submitting the legal complaint, responding to requests for documents, and filing pre-trial motions. These pieces are all critical; however, they can take time to play out.

What is the Deadline for Filing a Roblox Lawsuit?

The deadline for filing a Roblox addiction lawsuit depends on your specific situation and the state you are in. Your state will have a statute of limitations that says how long you have to bring a case against Roblox Corporation. For example, the filing window may begin when your child starts to show symptoms of an addiction and end shortly after they turn 18. A gaming addiction attorney can talk to you about your situation and advise you on what dates you need to file legal documents.

Roblox Settlements and Awards

Our firm estimates that some Roblox addiction lawsuits may reach between $100,000 to $300,000 or more. Whether someone receives a settlement depends on a range of factors, including the strength of their allegations against Roblox and the severity of their child’s injuries because of their Roblox addiction. Someone may receive a settlement through out-of-court negotiations or a financial award at a formal trial.

Factors Affecting the Value of a Roblox Lawsuit

Many factors can influence someone’s final settlement amount. These include the impact of the person’s Roblox addiction on their quality of life and physical or mental health. Additionally, someone with a severe injury—such as depression or anxiety that required hospitalization—may qualify for a higher financial award than someone with mild or minor damages.
